HEART FAILURE
Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, is a complex clinical condition when the ability of the heart to efficiently pump blood to the rest of the body is compromised.
This inability of the heart to pump blood effectively can be caused by abnormal structure-muscles, valves, conducting system and /or heart function.
Abnormal heart rate and heart rhythm, obesity, thyroid disease, alcohol, and hypertension may affect structure and/or function and can lead to heart failure if not corrected early.
Onset of heart failure may be rapid or slow depending on the underlying mechanism. Heart failure will lead to:
- Shortness of breath that worsens when lying down.
- Easy fatigability /Tiredness and weakness.
- Swelling of the legs, starting with feet and ankles, abdomen.
- Abnormal heartbeat and rhythm - rapid and/or irregular
- Inability to cope/tolerate physical activity even light walking.
- Persistent cough and wheeze.
- Very rapid weight gain from fluid buildup despite poor appetite.
